Add a product
Create a stock item or a service with its price, tax, unit and the stock you already have on hand.
Products are the goods you sell and the services you charge for. Stock items keep a count of what you have, which goes down by itself when you sell and up when you receive.
Steps
-
Open Inventory and click New product. You find it at the top of the Inventory overview and the Products tab.
Open Inventory -
Choose the type and give it a name. A Stock item is something you keep on a shelf: its quantity is tracked. A Service is work or a fee, with no stock.
Type and name -
Add your codes. The SKU is your own short code, the Barcode is what a scanner reads (leave it empty and generate one later), and the Category groups products in lists and on the register.
SKU, barcode and category -
Set the price, tax and unit. The sale price is filled in on invoices, receipts and the online shop. The unit is how you count it: pcs, kg, bag, box.
Price, tax and unit -
Set a reorder level (optional). When stock drops to this number the product shows as Low and is listed under To reorder.
Reorder level (optional) -
Enter your opening stock. Type how many you have today and what each one cost you. It is added to your books as opening stock.
Opening stock -
Click Save product. The product page shows what you have on hand, its average cost, margin and stock value, with every stock move below.
Save the product
Tip Selling in sizes or colours? Save the product without stock first, then add its variants. The guide Sell a product in sizes and colours shows how.
Good to know
- The opening stock box is only on new products. Later, use Receive stock or Count stock.
- The type can't change once a product has stock moves. Untick Active on the edit page to archive a product you no longer sell: its history is kept.
- Products with Show in the shop ticked appear in your online shop (with the E-commerce add-on).
