Why can't I use this date? (filed tax period)

Once a tax return is filed, nothing that touches tax can be dated in that period. Use a date after it, and correct mistakes in the open period.

When you mark a VAT or GST return as filed, the tax in it is settled in your books and the period is closed. After that, an invoice, bill or entry that affects tax can't be dated in that period, because it would change a return you already sent to the tax office. You see: This date is in a filed tax period (up to …). Use a date after …

How to see it

  1. Check the filed returns. In Tax Returns, Filed returns lists each period you filed. The newest one sets the lock date.

  2. A date in that period is refused. For example, a draft invoice dated in a filed month can't be issued.

    The date is refused

What to do

  • Use a date after the filed period, normally today. The tax then goes into your next return.
  • Correcting an old invoice? Make a credit note or void it; both are dated today, so the correction lands in the open period.
  • Drafts can have any date; the check happens when you issue or post.

Note A filed return can't be undone. If it was filed by mistake, ask your accountant how to correct it with the tax office, then record the correction in the open period.
