Invoice in another currency

Bill a foreign customer in their currency; your books stay in your own currency at the day's rate.

Video 51 s 5 steps Updated 5 Nov 2026

Customers abroad can be billed in their own currency. The invoice shows their currency; your books record it in yours, at the exchange rate of the day.

Steps

  1. Start a new invoice and pick the customer. A customer with their own currency switches the invoice to it. You can also change Currency yourself.

  2. Check the rate. Rate shows how much one unit is in your currency. Leave it blank to use the saved rate on the invoice date, or type the rate you agreed.

  3. Add the lines. Prices are in the invoice currency.

  4. Check the tax and totals. Sales abroad are often free of tax: if so, pick No tax on the line. The totals are in the invoice currency.

  5. Save and issue. Under the total, the invoice shows what it is worth in your currency at the rate used. When the customer pays, enter the bank's rate on the payment: any difference is booked as an exchange gain or loss.

Note A currency must be switched on first, in Finance & Accounting → Currencies. See Currencies and exchange rates.

Good to know

  • Set a customer's currency on their page, so new invoices and quotations start in it.
  • Reports and the aged receivables list show amounts in your own currency.
